An extraordinary exhibition from one of the world’s leading studio glass artists is now on display in the National Art Glass Gallery at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery – Nick Mount: the fabric of work. Featuring a series of unique installations of blown, carved and polished glass, assembled with wood and metal components, these works combine a respect for traditional glassmaking techniques with a wry Australian wit.
Nick Mount has been one of the leading figures in the Australian studio glass movement since the early 1970s. Over the subsequent decades, as both teacher and practitioner, he has made a significant contribution to the development of glass as an artistic medium in this country. Nick Mount exhibits regularly in Europe, the United States and Japan; and his work is represented in major significant private and public collections including state galleries across the country, the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Art Glass Collection at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery.
In 2012, Nick Mount was honoured with the Living Treasure: Masters of Australian Craft Award, which celebrates the achievements of Australia’s most iconic crafts practitioners, from Object: Australian Design Centre.
Describing The fabric of work, Nick Mount explains that, “The pieces presented in this exhibition describe the dominant themes and aesthetic of my work over the last few years. Some of the pieces are new, while a few have been included for their particular significance in the telling of the story. The Scent Bottles, Plumb Bobs, Bubbles and Still Life compositions all describe an evolution in my work that weaves the yarn into a simple fabric that supports my belief in the importance of family, community and hand work.
“I identify as a maker and believe “work” is fundamental in the development of identity. This principal extends well beyond those of us that call ourselves "craftspeople" and, for me, the fabric of our community is, to a large extent, determined by the work we do with our hands.”
Nick Mount: The fabric of work is on display in the National Art Glass Gallery at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery from Saturday 18 January until Sunday 23 March, 2014. The exhibition will be officially launched by Dr Denis O’Connor on Friday 14 February, at 6pm.
